Summertime

Lyrics: Gershwin, Heywood
Music: Gershwin

Played by Jerry Garcia as an instrumental with Merl Saunders in the early 1970s. Later recorded with David Grisman and Tony Rice, also as an instrumental. Sung by Stu Allen with Phil Lesh & Friends in 2016.

In a 1996 interview, Dick Latvala listed Summertime as one of the tracks on the vault tapes of the Mickey and the Hartbeats shows in 1968. It's not on any of the circulating tapes.

Summertime, and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high
Your Daddy's rich and your Ma is good lookin'
So, hush little baby, don't you cry

One of these mornin's you're gonna rise up singin'
Then you'll spread your wings, and you'll take to the sky
But 'till that mornin' there's a nothin' can harm you,
with Daddy and Mammy standin' by

But 'till that mornin' there's a nothin' can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin' by
