Slow Blues

Lyrics: Ron McKernan
Music: Ron McKernan

Eric Thompson recorded Pigpen playing this on 20 January 1964. The tape was played by David Gans during the KPFA Grateful Dead Marathon in 2003. It's just listed under the title "Slow Blues" - it seems partly improvised, and borrowing from other songs.

Hang on baby, don't think cos you're pretty now, don't think cos you're pretty, that you can get every man in town (note 1 )
Yeah because you know there's one man, there's one man who ain't gonna stand for your jiving ways
Yes because you know why, I done find long time ago, yeah hey that you can't do it right anyway

Yes I said I look out the window, yes I see the rain falling down in the street
Yes I said I looked out in the window, yes and I seen that rain fall in the street
Yes I seen, I seen every time I look out that window, yes I seen something, child, that I'd like to meet

I said she got, box back nitties, yes and I said she got, great big old noble thighs (note 2)
She got box back nitties now, yes and she got great big old noble thighs
Yeah she works under cover like a [spy], yeah she works under cover, lord, with a, with a boar hog's eye

I can see everybody, everybody making it in the world excepting me, yeah
Hey I can see everybody, I can see everybody making it in the world except me
Yes but I don't give a damn, because I got the blues now don't you see

Well I been walking in the rain, but I just can't help myself if I get all wet
Yes I been walking in the rain, but I just can't help my ugly self about getting wet
But you know, don't mean no difference no how neither, cos I'm having a good time anyway
Notes
(1) This line is a quote from Lightnin' Hopkins song "Don't Think 'Cause You're Pretty" - see below
(2) See the notes about this 'verse' in Turn On Your Lovelight

The Lightnin' Hopkins song "Don't Think 'Cause You're Pretty" has lyrics:
Well don't think because you're pretty woman, got every man in town
Don't think because you're pretty woman, got every man in town
Yeah you know you, ain't doing nothing but tearing your own reputation down

You know the blues is a mighty bad feeling, when you have them 'bout the break of day
You know the blues is a mighty bad feeling, when you have them long 'bout the break of day
Well you look over on the bed, where your baby used to lay

What you want with a rooster, rooster, he won't crow for day
What d'you want with a woman she won't do nothing she say
