New Orleans

Lyrics: Guido, Royster
Music: Guido, Royster

Played only a few times by the Grateful Dead, mainly in 1969-70, as well as by the New Riders of the Purple Sage.

I said hey, hey, yeah, yeah (I said hey, hey, yeah, yeah)
I said hey, yeah, yeah, yeah (I said hey, yeah, yeah, yeah)

Well, come on everybody take a trip with me
Down the Mississippi, down to New Orleans
They got the honeysuckle blooming on the honeysuckle vine
And love is blooming there all the time
You know that every Southern belle is a Mississippi queen
Down the Mississippi, down in New Orleans

I said hey, hey, yeah, yeah (I said hey, hey, yeah, yeah)
I said look out, come on, yeah, yeah, yeah (I said look out, come on, yeah, yeah, yeah)

Well, come on take a stroll down on Basin Street
And listen to the music with the Dixieland beat
Oh, magnolia blossom fills the air
And you ain't been to heaven if you ain't been there
They got the sweet moss hanging from a big oak tree (note 1)
Down the Mississippi, down in New Orleans

I said hey, hey, yeah, yeah (I said hey, hey, yeah, yeah)
I said look out, come on, yeah, yeah, yeah (I said look out, come on, yeah, yeah, yeah)

Notes
(1) The original version has "rich moss" not "sweet moss."

There is one recording from 1966 on an unlabelled reel where someone says "New Orleans" and Bobby responds "New Orleans?" and the Dead then start something that bears little relation to the song (except perhaps for the drum intro). It's basically a Pigpen rap:
I want to tell everybody if you don't know how tonight
You've got to feel good, and you know you've got to feel all right
I want to know if you feel it, if you hear it, if you understand what I'm talking about right now
I want to know if you hear it, if you hear it right now
Let me hear you say yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
All right
Let me hear you say yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah)
All right now
Let me hear you talking about it one more time
I want to know if you've ever had a little bit of love
Taken from in your heart
I want to know if you've had your girlfriend snatched away from you with her talk
Yes you know every time that your girl got to leave you, you know you've got to feel all bad
Every time that girl gonna walking down the road and you know that you feel so bad
Yres you feel so bad
Now I wanna know
I wanna know, do you know what I'm talking about
If you know what I'm talking about, I want to hear you say yeah
I want to hear you say yeah
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah, all right
C'mon now
It's been a long, long time since I seen my lover
It's been a long time on the road
She's been away from my house, many many years
I know she's gonna carry a heavy load
But when she comes back home, she makes me feel all right
Sneaking in my room in the middle of the night
She make me feel good, she make me feel all right
Every time she come on home
And I want to say yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah, yeah
C'mon down
All right
Everything gonna be about all right
When I find my girl in the middle of the night
Everything is gonna be just so so
Yes she's gonna love me now, yes I know
She says yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah, all right
