My Baby Left Me

Lyrics: Arthur "Big Boy" Cruddup
Music: Arthur "Big Boy" Cruddup

Jerry Garcia played a verse of this with the Grateful Dead on 18 April 1986, before switching to That's All Right Mama. There is no record of him playing it with any of his solo bands.

The lyrics Jerry Garcia sang were:

Well, my baby left me, even took my shoes
Left me with them low-down blues
My baby left me, yes she left me
My baby even left me, never said a word
The first two lines that Garcia sang don't appear in other versions of "My Baby Left Me" - instead, they appear in some versions of Cannonball Blues.

These are the full lyrics from the well-known Elvis Presley version:
My baby left me, never said a word
Was it something I done, something that she heard?
My baby left me, my baby left me
My baby left me, never said a word

Lord I stand at my window, wring my hands and cry
I hate to lose that woman, hate to say goodbye
You know she left me, yes she left me
My baby even left me, never said a word

Baby one of these mornings, Lord it won't be long
You'll look for me, and Daddy will be gone
You left me, you know you left me
My baby even left me, never said a word

Now I stand at my window, wring my hands and moan
All I know is that the one I love is gone
You know she left me, yes she left me
My baby even left me, never said a word
Yes my baby left me, never said a word
Arthur Cruddup's own version shows its links to That's All Right:
My baby left me, never said a word
Nothing I done, it's only something she heard
But she done left, yes she left me
My baby left me, never said a word

I stood and [whined] and waited, wring my hand and cry
My baby left me, she never said goodbye
You know she left me, yes she left me
My baby left me, never said a word

Well she went away and left me, that's all right with you
That's all right baby, any way you do
You know she left me, yes she left me
My baby left me crying, never said a word

All I could do was stand and moan, wring my hands and cry
You know that woman did not even say goodbye
You know she left me, yes she left me
My baby left me crying, never said goodbye

My baby left me, my baby left me
My baby left me, never even said goodbye
