Good Lovin'

Lyrics: Artie Resnick/Rudy Clark
Music: Artie Resnick/Rudy Clark

Some 1969 versions of this had Jerry Garcia on lead vocals (a), but Pigpen then took the song over. It was revived in 1976 with Bob Weir singing lead, as he has done subsequently with Ratdog.

When Pigpen sang it, he often included extensive raps after the verses. An example is below

Well I was feelin' so bad
So I asked my family doctor 'bout what I had
I said now doc (doctor)
Mister MD (doctor)
Oh can you tell me (doctor)
What's ailing me (doctor)

Chorus
He said yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
All you need
All you really need
Is good lovin'
Gotta have lovin'
Good lovin'
Everybody gotta have lovin'
Good lovin'
Gimme, gimme some lovin'
Good lovin'

So come on baby, well squeeze me tight
Don't you want your daddy to feel alright
Well I said now baby (baby)
Well it's for sure (baby)
I got the fever (baby)
And you got the cure (baby)

[chorus]

Origins
The original version of "Good Lovin'" was recorded in 1965 by Limmie Snell under the name "Lemme B. Good", with writing credits to Rudy Clark. (thanks to Eric Levy for letting me know about this). The lyrics were:
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

People say to me
You got yourself a new girl we see
But she's ugly and can't sing
Are you gonna give her a diamond ring?

And I say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Let me tell you what she's got
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin'

She can have a diamond ring
Her good lovin' now is everything

When I feel so blue
Don't you know she knows just what to do
'Cause she treats me so good
Makes a fella feel just like he should

And I say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Let me tell you what she's got
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin'

She can have a diamond ring
Her good lovin' now is everything

Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Good good lovin' baby
Good lovin'
Gimme good lovin' mama
Good lovin'
I need good lovin' baby
The song was rewritten and recorded by The Olympics in the same year, with writing credits to Clark and Artie Resnick. That version (and the subsequent Young Rascals version) are very similar to what the Grateful Dead sang.

Pigpen rap
This is an example of one of Pigpen's raps, from 14 April 1972, as best I can transcribe it:
Early in the morning
Everybody need a little, little lovin'
In the evening
You know it's true
Late in the evening
You know it too
You got to have it
I don't care who you are
You got to have it
I don't care who you are
You got to have some love in the morning
A taste in the afternoon
Just a little more 'round the midnight hour
[Down] it soon
You know that love
Drive a man to drink
Make a professor
Forget how to think
Do many strange things, babes
To your mind
Tied a rope [?]
That can find yourself
On a straight line
What's the matter with you
I got you all turned round and messed up over
Yes I do
Ain't nothing
Gonna stop
No, no
Nothing gonna stop it
No, no, no
Huh
So easy and slow
So easy and slow
My, my, my, my, my, my
Oh you know, when I ask my rider
Sometime in the morning
Say now please, darling
Turn on over
Said all I need
Before I go to work
Said all I need
Before I go to work
Is just a little bit of your your sweet thing
Just a little bit of your sweet thing
I know you got it, darling
I been there before
I just want to come back home
One more time again
Yes I want to come on back home
One more time again
Raise up
And edge on over
Rise on up now baby
And ease on over
Yes all I need
Yes, all I need
What make you think
I got to hold you all night long
What make you think that a tomcat
Prowl alone
What make you think
Make a rabbit hunt a hound
Same old thing now darling
Keep telling you down, my darling
Keep telling me
Tell me now
Speak to me
Yes it is

I want to tell all you fellas something
I want to tell all you fellas something now
I don't know
If you think that you're cool
I don't know
If you've ever been anyone's fool
I'll tell you one thing
That I want you to understand
Just one thing now
For you to understand
I don't care how strong a man you are
Don't care how strong it can get
I tell you one thing
You can't miss
I know you need it
I know you want it
I know you got to have it
I know you're gonna get it
Let me tell you something
Women have got them tricks
You know they got them
Even the chicks
Wind around
Wind around
Your little finger if you let 'em
Wind you round
Turn you every way but loose
Turn you every way but loose
Turn you every way but loose
You know I come home one morning
Come home one morning
I been out on a four day creep
Drinking and gambling, carrying on
All next week
Walking the dog
Lay up in the bed
You know I want to lay down
Rest my weary head
Drinking and gambling
For days and nights on end
Sure make a man [turn a child]
Yes, I know it, friends
Yes, I'll tell you something
The second I lay down
In come my old lady, say
Turn on round
Don't let me get you doing it
That old time
No matter how tired you resisting
Can't you do it every time
Yes I can
Huh
'Cause them women
Them women got an evil loving ways
Women got an evil loving ways
Make a man go crazy
Can't control yourself
You don't know what you're doing
No, no, can't control yourself
A man will do anything
You want to do
Any damn old thing
A poor man can do, but keep on loving
Ah, my
Keep on loving
Ah, uh, yes darling
One thing
That I ask my baby
I need momma
A favour to me
Ease, ease on over
Ease on over
Raise them up
Turn on over baby
Raise yourself up
Come on now you got to turn on over
[?]
All right now
I ask my little girl one time
She begin to run and hide
That's my little girl
She begin to run and hide
I said baby
All I want to do
Is jump in your saddle and ride
Jump in your saddle and ride
Jump in your saddle and ride now baby
Jump in your saddle and ride
You're my sweet little mare
I ride you everywhere
You know you're my sweet little mare
And I ride you everywhere
Let me jump in the saddle now baby
Let me ride
Let me jump in your saddle and ride
Start on easy
Mama you're gonna go slow
Start out walking
Start out walking
Real slow
And then ease on up just a little bit
Ease on up a little more
Ease on up now woman
Just a little bit more
My, my, my, my
My, my
I got to jump up in your saddle and ride
My, my
My, my, my my, my
That's all I got to do now
Last time I was in St Louis
Went out on a four day ride
By the time I got back
I was looking at hell my eyes
Little old girl
Seventeen years old
Daddy had a big old shotgun
Can double unload
Caught me's up that house
Was having the fun
Had to turn up, back up
Started into run, 'cause you know I started
Had to keep on truckin'
My, my
I could fly like that
I could fly that night
I could fly that night
I could fly that night
I could fly that night
Shotgun after me
Sheriff behind
Shotgun after me
And the sheriff behind
Had to keep moving
Had to keep on going
Keep on moving
Keep on going
Keep on running
With my boots in my hand
Keep on running
I got to [?]
[scream]

Feel all right, yes it did
Yes it did

And now
I ain't old tail-dragger
Now our wives ain't much [?]
Go down to little girl's house
Ain't nobody can track me back
I know when there's some cookies baking
I could smell it a mile away
I know when them's [?]
I can smell it a mile away
I asked my baby
Turn around
Asked my baby
Turn around
If you can't turn around
Turn your damper down
Can't turn around, turn your damper down
It smell too good
Yes I do
Feel like eating some of that pie now
Some cherry pie
[?]
Can't turn your damper down
Mama, turn your oven around
If you can't turn your damper down
Mama, turn your oven around
Can't keep ot under control, no
All the boys
In the neighbourhood
Tell me
That your baker's shop is good
Some cherry pie, some cherry pie
I think I'll drop in by
All right, yes I will
Yes I will
Yes I will now mama, yes I will
