Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jim Lauderdale
A track on Jim Lauderdale's 2013 album "Black Roses" with lyrics by Robert Hunter.
In his Road Journal for 16 June 1999, Hunter wrote
"... developing half a dozen new songs
(Serafina Magdalena, Ebenezer, Bolt from the Blue,
Sack of Babylon, Back to the Somme, St. Agnes' Day)
and working them up for performance". I assume that he subsequently gave the lyric of Ebenezer to Jim Lauderdale, who set it to
music.
Look at EbenezerNotes
Caught without the brass to pay his fine
Won't you pass the tweezer
Believe that I got something in my eye
Standing at the grinder
Every weekday shop from twelve to nine
Things can't get much harder
And then again I guess they must be fine
Chucka chucka chucka
Chucka chucka chucka, Louise
Look at Ebenezer
Come on over, have a look and see
Way down in the water
Maybe way up in the air
Look at Ebenezer
Baby, do pull up a chair
Look at all them nuts and bolts
[Waltzing like a tiger] on the moon
Sealing up the bedroom
Nothing left to say, but see you soon
You ask how much I love you
I guess I'm gonna have to demonstrate
Or take the Fifth Amendment
And then again, I guess it's much too late
Chucka chucka chucka
Chucka chucka chucka, Louise
Look at Ebenezer
Come on over, have a look and see
Way down in the water
Maybe way up in the air
Look at Ebenezer
Baby, do pull up a chair
Creeping round to midnight
It must be time to come on up and play
Face the living daylights
Flow on through the window [cup your hair]
Someone's in the kitchen
With a razor cutting radishes to shreds (note 1)
I'm leaving in the morning
Before they get ideas in their head
Chucka chucka chucka
Chucka chucka chucka, Louise
Look at Ebenezer
Come on over, have a look and see
Way down in the water
Baby, way up in the air
Look at Ebenezer
Baby, do pull up a chair
Chucka chucka chucka
Chucka chucka chucka
Chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka chucka Louise
