Baby Let Me Follow You Down

Lyrics: Trad arr Eric Von Schmidt
Music: Trad arr Eric Von Schmidt

Sung by Stu Allen with Phil Lesh & Friends at Terrapin Crossraods in August 2016.

Baby let me follow you down
Baby let me follow you down
Well I'll do anything in this godalmighty world
If you just let me follow you down

Can I come home with you
Baby can I come home with you
Yes I'll do anything in this godalmighty world
If you just let me come home with you

Baby let me follow you down
Baby let me follow you down
Well I'll do anything in this godalmighty world
If you just let me follow you down

Yes I'll do anything in this godalmighty world
If you just let me follow you down

Origins
There has been a lot of discussion about the origins of this song since Bob Dylan recorded it on his first album and said he learnt it from Ric [sic] Von Schmidt. It can be traced back to Blind Boy Fuller's "Mama Let Me Lay It On You" recorded in 1936, which in turn was an adaption of Walter Coleman's song of the same name recorded earlier the same year. Both of these seem to be adaptations of "Can I Do It For You" recorded in 1930 by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy.
