Where Did You Go?

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Robert Hunter

The penultimate part of Robert Hunter's Amagamalin Street Suite. Hunter solo performances sometimes appear wrongly in setlists as "Where Will I Be?" (it bears no relation to the David Crosby song with that title).

Knock on the door
An echo returns
Where love flamed
Emptiness burns
The streets are empty
The bars are closed
I take out a room
And I sleep in my clothes

Where did you go?
I want to know

Laying awake
In a strange part of town
Sky like slate
Rain patters down
Check-out time
Believe it or not
Last buck for coffee
It's weak but it's hot

Where do I go?
I want to know
Where do I go?

The folks on the street
Look weary and gray
Was it love gone wrong
Done them that way?
My reflection on the window
Has the face to say
I'm just another loser
On the street today

Where did you go?
I want to know

It went by so quick
All that remains
Are variations
On the theme of pain
A fat crack of thunder
Seems to call my name
I forget you a minute
Ducking out of the rain

Where does it go?
I want to know
Where did you go?
Where did you go?

Synopsis
Robert Hunter gives this synopsis in "Box Of Rain":
"Maggie leaves Murphy. In this soliloquy, he speaks of the emptiness of his existence without her."
Robert Hunter sang an earlier version in 1980, with a different chorus. It is normally listed--not surprisingly--as "Adventures In Love".
You knock on the door, an echo returns
Where love used to flame, now emptiness burns
The streets are all empty, the bars are all closed
You take out a room, and you sleep in your clothes

Adventures in love
Adventures in love
Adventures in love, always the same
Only one love and only one game
Adventures in love, shining down
Adventures in love

Next morning you wake in a strange part of town
A sky like slate, the rain patters down
You're on your own now, believe it or not
You pay for your coffee, it's weak but it's hot

Adventures in love
Adventures in love
Adventures in love, shining, shining down
Shining down, shine on down
Shining down, shine on down
Shining down, shining down
[etc]

The folks on the street all look weary and grey
You wonder if love was what made them that way
Then you catch your reflection in the very same clay
As any other loser on the street today

Adventures in love
Adventures in love
Adventures in love
Adventures in love, always the same
Only one love and only one game
Adventures in love
Adventures in love
In love
