What'll You Raise

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia

The Dead recorded this in 1979 during the sessions for Go To Heaven, but never played it live. Robert Hunter then recorded it in 1985 for the album 'Rock Columbia'. The version that Garcia sings is somewhat different to the version Robert Hunter recorded, and the music for the two versions is different - the Go To Heaven version is credited to Hunter/Garcia whereas the Rock Columbia version is credited to Hunter alone.

Saw the lady face to face
Who rules the joker commands the ace
I just rolled in from the golden state
Just a dusty spoke on the wheel of fate

What'll you raise
What'll you raise
What'll you raise to take my hand

The hand I hold is the hand I play
Whoever thought they would fall this way
Can't see me if you won't call
And it might be a storm bluff after all

What'll you raise
What'll you raise
What'll you raise to take my hand

What'll you raise
What'll you raise
What'll you raise to see my hand

[When there is evil]
[Go to] the breeze
Who can deliver at all?
Is there a [gaping]
Or any safekeeping?
If not how far can we fall?
Far can we fall?

East of the sun and west of the moon
Darling hold on, I'll be coming soon
Maybe our love was meant to be
The only solution is to wait and see

What'll you raise
What'll you raise
What'll you raise to take my hand

What'll you raise
What'll you raise
What'll you raise to take my hand
The Robert Hunter version in his lyric book "Box Of Rain", and the version he recorded, is as follows:
Met the lady face to face
who rules the joker and commands the ace
Just rolled in from the golden state
a dusty spoke on the wheel of fate

Chorus
What'll you raise
What'll you raise
What will you raise
to stay in the game?

The only hand I hold is the hand I play
If I don't win it'll stay that way
Won't ever know if I don't call
You could be bluffing, baby, after all

[Chorus]

I follow the breeze
The quick autumn leaves
Who can deliver us all?
Is there a reaping
Or any safekeeping?
If not how far can we fall?
How far can we fall?

[Chorus]

South of the moon, north of the sun
Cards on the table, it's one to one
Maybe our love was meant to be
Only way to find out is to pay and see

[Chorus]

Dive for the diamonds or shoot for the heart
It's all uncertain but that's the art
I never bet on any sure thing
Since your five deuces beat my four kings

[Chorus]

What'll you pay
What'll you pay
You'll have to pay
To stay in the game

[Chorus]
