That'll Be The Day

Lyrics: Holly, Allison, Petty
Music: Holly, Allison, Petty

This was sung by Garcia when the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane played together on 7 September 1969. David Lemieux has also unearthed a rehearsal tape from 12 August 1975 when they played a very ragged version of this song.

Chorus
Well that'll be the day
When you say goodbye
Well that'll be the day
When you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave
You know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day
When I die

When cupid shot his dart
He shot it at your heart
So if we ever part then I'll leave you
[I didn't] hold me and
Tell me boldly
That someday well I'll be true

[chorus]

When cupid shot his dart
He shot it at your heart
So if we ever part then I'll leave you
Tell me boldly
Tell me boldly
That someday well I'll be true

Well that'll be the day
Ooh ooh that'll be the day
Ooh ooh that'll be the day
Ooh ooh that'll be the day
Garcia doesn't really seem to know the words, and mumbles bits of the verse. He misses out all together the following verse:
Well you give me all your lovin'
And your turtle dovin'
And all your hugs and kisses and your money too
Well uh you know you love me baby
Still you tell me maybe
That someday well I'll be blue
