Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional

Chorus
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
A band of angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home

[Chorus]

If you get to heaven before I do
Coming for to carry me home
Tell all my friends I'll be coming there too
Coming for to carry me home

[Chorus]

Background
According to Wikipedia, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was composed by Wallis Willis, ... sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven by a chariot. ... Alexander Reid heard Willis singing [this song] and transcribed the words and melody. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers then popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe. Thanks to Eric Levy for sending the Jubilee Singers' recording from 1909, with lyrics:
Chorus
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

[Chorus]

I'm sometimes up and I'm sometimes down
Coming for to carry me home
Still my soul feels heavenward bound
Coming for to carry me home

[Chorus]

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
A band of angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home

[Chorus]
[Chorus]
