Streetwise

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Robert Hunter

The tenth part of Robert Hunter's Amagamalin Street Suite.

You said - you said you love me (note 1)
You said - you said you care
Now you - you don't say anything
You just sit there and stare

(So streetwise)
You never rock the boat
(So streetwise)
You know the way to the end of the road
(So streetwise)
But can you survive
the test of fire and come out alive?

You never say you're sorry
You never say okay
You don't say - anything
You just look through me that way

(So streetwise)
You got a heart made of stone
(So streetwise)
Know how to go it alone
(So streetwise)
When you're done on your luck
just stick out your thumb and
flag down a truck

Just say count on me
Life could be so easy
Say you do or don't agree
but don't just sit there and be

so-so-so ...
(So streetwise)
You've seen it all before
(Streetwise)
You know a door is a door
(Streetwise)
You just open it wide
step into the street
and leave it all behind

You said you love me
and you said you care
Now you don't say anything
Just sit there and stare

(So streetwise)
You never rock the boat
(Streetwise)
You know the way to the end of the road
(Streetwise)
But can you survive
the test of fire and come out alive?

(Streetwise)
You've seen it all before
(Streetwise)
You know a door is a door
(Streetwise)
You just open it wide
step into the street
and leave it all behind
You're so streetwise!
Notes
(1) in a live 1983 performance, Hunter sang this verse as:
Say you love me
Say you care
Say anything
Don't just sit there and stare
And similarly for the other verses

Synopsis
Robert Hunter gives this synopsis in "Box Of Rain":
"Back on Amagamalin Street, their escape attempt proving a washout, Murphy finds Maggie growing more and more distant. She has lost the innocence that first attracted him to her and appears to be fast becoming another streetwise casualty of skid row."
