Mad

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Mickey Hart

Recorded on Robert Hunter's first solo album, "Tales Of The Great Rum Runners." At about the same time (1974) it was recorded for a Mickey Hart solos album, Area Code 415, that was never released - see below.

I was born at on Sunday, started work next day
I had to wait til Friday to get my first week's pay
I spent it all on Saturday, got drunk as I could be
Ended in the city jail for blood in first degree

That made me mad
Well, that made me mad
It made me so damned mad
It made me crazy

I run into Billy Bligh strolling through the town
I can't take the way he walks or the way he lays it down
I said: Give me one good reason why you should be alive
You stepped on my shadow and now you've got to die

'Cause you made me mad
Well, that made me mad
It made me so damned mad
It made me crazy

Being in a mellow mood I went to see Marie
She was sitting on the swing with my good friend McGee
McGee said: Don't get hot and bent, it's plain for all to see
If it ain't twenty others, hell, it might as well be me

And that made me mad
Well, that made me mad
It made me so damned mad
It made me crazy

Devil come to get me long before my day
Said: I need a man like you and I can raise your pay
Give you fifty dollar bills and all the beer in town
'Cause you're a natural mother's son, as best as can be found

The ladies call me Sugar but my name is Stainless Steel
They all know the way I look and love the way I feel
When I come to call on you, you better be in bed
'Cause if you're out a-hooking, remember what I said

That makes me mad
Well, that makes me mad
It makes me so damned mad
It makes me crazy

Take your flimflam boogeyman, turn him upside down
Stick his head right up his hat and drive him in the ground
The things he tries to tell you would make the Devil smile
One hand in your pocket and praying all the while

That makes me mad
Well, that makes me mad
It makes me so damned mad
It makes me crazy
At least two versions of the song circulate on the unreleased Mickey Hart album, normally under the titles "It Makes Me Mad" or "It Makes Me Feel Mad." One has distorted (and unintelligible) lyrics, and one has Kathi McDonald singing. Her version is slightly truncated, with an additional bridge:
Born on a Sunday, started working next day
Had to wait till Friday to get my first week's pay
Spent it all on Saturday, got drunk as I could be
Landed up got sling in jail got blood in first degree (see below)

It made me mad
It makes me mad
It makes me so mad
It makes me crazy

Being in a mellow mood, I went to see Magee
He was sitting in a swing with my good friend Marie
Magee said don't get hot and bent, it's plain for all to see
If it ain't twenty others, it might as well be me

It made me mad
It made me mad
It made me so damn mad
It made me crazy

Thinking 'bout you baby
Wondering how you are right now
I'm out on the road
With no man to call my own

Devil come to get me, long before my day
Said I need a girl like you and I can raise your pay
Give you fifty dollar bill, all the beer in town
'Cause you're a natural daddy's girl, the best that can be found

It made me mad
It made me mad
It made me so damn mad
It made me crazy

The guys call me Sugar, but the name is Stainless Steel
They all know the way I look, and they love the way I feel
When I come to call on you, you'd better be in your bed
If you're out a-hooking, remember what I said

It makes me mad
It makes me mad
It makes me so damn mad
It makes me crazy
There's a framed version of the lyrics in the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa, Florida. A plaque says the lyrics were handwritten by Robert Hunter on the back of a sheet that list specs for Jerry Garcia's guitar amp modifications. It's slightly different to the two versions above in that it doesn't include either the "I run into Billy Bligh" verse from the Hunter version nor the "Thinking 'bout you baby" bridge from the Hart version. It also has the last line of the first verse as "Landed up in [Slingant] jail" - it's very hard to read "Slingant" and I can't work out what jail it might be. I think my transcription "Landed up got sling in jail" above must be a mis-hearing of this line.
