The Last Time

Lyrics: Jagger, Richards
Music: Jagger, Richards

Played by the Grateful Dead from 1990 onwards, sung by Garcia and Weir. Also played by Dead & Company in August 2021 as a tribute to Charlie Watts who had just died.

It appears it may also have been played by the Warlocks in pre-Dead days. In an interview with Garcia by Randy Groenke in March 1967, there was the following exchange:

Q: I remember when you were the Warlocks and at Magoo's you were doing stuff like "The Last Time"?
Garcia: Right, popular stuff.
Lyrics:
Well I told you once and I told you twice
But you never listened to my advice
You don't try very hard to please me
With what you know it should be easy

Chorus
Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time, I don't know
Oh no

Well I'm sorry baby that but I can't stay
Feeling like I do today
There's too much pain and too much sorrow
I guess I'll feel the same tomorrow

[chorus]

Well I told you once and I told you twice
Now you'll have to pay the price
Here's a chance to change your mind
'Cause I'll be gone a long long time

[chorus]

Could be the last time, baby
I don't know
Could be the last time, baby
I don't know
Could be the last time, baby
I don't know
Could be the last time, baby
I don't know
[etc]
