If Not For You

Lyrics: Bob Dylan
Music: Bob Dylan
This was only played during rehearsals for the concerts Dylan played with the Dead. They never in fact played it live. Dylan sang--mumbled!--only a fragment of the full lyrics:

Without your love, my sky would fall, rain would gather too
Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, I'd be lost, if not for you

If not for you, [?], the world would end
I would [bound] back again
[To shine or do], if not for you
The full Dylan lyrics as on "New Morning" are:
If not for you
Babe, I couldn't even find the door
Couldn't even see the floor
I'd be sad and blue
If not for you

If not for you
Babe, I'd lay awake all night (note 1)
Wait for the morning light
To shine in through
But it would not be new
If not for you

If not for you
My sky would fall
Rain would gather too
Without your love I'd be nowhere at all
I'd be lost, if not for you
And you know it's true

If not for you
My sky would fall
Rain would gather too
Without your love I'd be nowhere at all
Oh what would I do?
If not for you

If not for you
Winter would have no spring
Couldn't hear the robin sing
I just wouldn't have a clue
Anyway it wouldn't ring true
If not for you

Notes
(1) the version with George Harrison on the "Bootleg" CDs is slightly different, most noticeably in this verse:
If not for you
The night would see me wide awake
The day would surely have to break
But it would not be new
If not for you

Recordings
None by the Dead or JGB. Dylan's versions are on "New Morning" and the "Bootleg" series.
