Lyrics: Anglin, Wright
Music: Anglin, Wright
Jerry Garcia recorded this with David Grisman but seemingly never played
it live. Jerry also rehearsed it with the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band but never
played it live. His one live performance appears to have been with the Good Old
Boys in February 1975. The song was also played by the New Riders of the Purple
Sage (but after Jerry had stopped playing with them).
The love light that's gleaming in your eyes
Has gone out to my surprise
We said goodbye, my heart bled
I can't revive a love that's dead
Chorus
Ashes of love, cold as ice
You made the debt, and I pay the price
Our love is gone, there's no doubt
Ashes of love, the flame burned out
I trusted you our love would stand
Your every wish was my command
My heart tells me I must forget
I loved you then, I'll love you yet
[chorus]
