Whiskey Is Sweeter Than Milk

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Greg Anton

Sung by Scott Guberman with various bands, including The Casual Coaltion. In setlists and recordings it seems to be listed as "(You Make Me) Sore To The Bone". I don't quite understand that. That title isn't obvious from the lyrics, and there is a Robert Hunter/Greg Anton song listed on ASCAP with the title "Whiskey Is Sweeter Than Milk", which seems an obvious fit with this song.

Pour me a cup of coffee
Tell you, tell you my needs
Sure bring in some whiskey
Get back and [roll] away

Set down chair at my table
Talk to me, you gave me some time
Talk back as soon as I'm able
Listen to the thunder chime

Blood is thicker than water
Flesh is softer than silk
Wine is stronger than you, babe
And whiskey, whiskey is sweeter than milk

I was born in the wind and the rain
Fixing up into a squall
Reckoning to be a hurricane
And that's not all

House caught fire, burned to the ground
Wind won over the rain
Swallowed my tears without a sound
Never like to show my pain

Don't mess around with my mind, girl
Don't mess around with my soul
Don't mess around with my reason, baby
Like a bright red flag
Like a bright red flag and a bone

Twenty years later I was on the road
Hitching [like the wind] to a fool
Now I'm back up and help me with my load
Don't mess around playing it cool

Leaves on the line are falling
Like branches of the tree of rain
Everywhere I hear you calling
With a voice so hungry with pain

[Hearts roll] baby be busted
But maybe that is all that I know
At least everyone that I trusted
That lie told me it has to be so

Blood is thicker than water
I notice that when you bleed
You might want to stick on a plaster
I expect that, I expect that's what you need

Blood is thicker than water
Flesh is softer than silk
Wine is stronger than you, babe
And whiskey, whiskey is sweeter than milk
Sweeter than milk
That's what you need
