Madam Mary

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jim Lauderdale

It looks from the track listing on the CD sleeve as if the title is "Madam Macy". But Lauderdale clearly sings "Madam Mary", so I assume it's a typo.

One friend only
That's all I had since I was born
One friend only
Since the dark day I was born
If you go and leave me lonely
I won't have no friend no more

Went to see Madam Mary
To get my fortune told
Went to see Madam Mary
To get my no good fortune told
There was no [man] in my future
But lots of silver amd gold

I told Madam Mary
I won't pay money for that
Listen Madam Mary
Take that fortune back
There's no sign of love in my future
I won't pay good money for that

It was a long cold summer
Followed by a long hot fall
It was a long cold summer
Followed by a long hot fall
It must be spring now
Judging by the falling leaves and all

You can find Madam Mary
At the end of the Bledsloe line
You can find Madam Mary
Right now most any old time
She's a State of the Union
Down here in the Lower 49
