Goin' To The Races

Lyrics: Carter Stanley
Music: Carter Stanley

Played by Jerry with Old And In The Way

Chorus
I'm goin' to the races
To see my pony run
And if I win any greenbacks
We're gonna have some fun

They say we can't get married
They say I'm not worthy of you
They don't know what they're talking about
They don't know what we've been through

[chorus]

Now when you go a-courting
There's something you should know
That long-tailed roustabout you wear (note 1)
Don't do a thing for you

[chorus]

Now when you see me coming
You better raise your window high
When you see me leaving little girl
Hang down your head and cry

[chorus]
Notes
(1) thanks to Vince Abadie for correcting this line for me and for his other help with the lyrics. A "long-tailed roustabout" is a type of long work-coat. Those two lines also appear in the Carter Family's song "Foggy Mountain Top" though not in the version that Jerry and Sarah Garcia sang in 1963.
