Grateful Dead Releases By Year
This table sets out the numbers of official Grateful Dead releases by year:
See here for the number of CDs released rather than the number of individual releases.
- by year recorded for Dick's Picks, Road Trips, Dave's Picks, videos and other live albums
- by year released for studio albums
(a) Albums here are the CDs "Birth of the Dead" originally in the Rhino box set
The Golden Road (1965-1973), but now also issued separately,
Rare Cuts And Oddities (containing both studio and live tracks but classified as a lve album here)
and the 2nd (live) disc in The Grateful Dead: 50th Anniversary Edition
(b) I have classified "Anthem Of The Sun" as a 1968 live album, though it contains a mixture of live and studio recordings, including some from late 1967
(c) I haven't included "Dylan And The Dead" in the list of Live Albums
(d) the soundtracks of the "View From The Vault" DVDs have also been issued on CD, as has the "Grateful Dead Movie" DVD. I have listed "Crimson, White And Indigo", "Closing of the Winterland", "Ticket To New Year's", "Truckin' Up To Buffalo" and Rockin' The Cradle" as Video releases even though they have also been issued as CDs.
(e) I have included "Fallout From The Philzone", "So Many Roads (1965-1995)", "Postcards Of The Hanging" and "Infrared Roses" as multi-year live albums (note that "So Many Roads" includes some studio as well as live tracks). I haven't included "Greyfolded"
(f) I haven't included the compilation albums "Skeletons From The Closet", "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been" or "The Arista Years" in this table.
Nor have I included the Rhino box set "The Golden Road", except for the two new CDs included separately in the table above.
NB: This means that albums such as "American Beauty" remain classified as studio albums even though the version in the Rhino box set now includes some live bonus tracks. The same goes for the albums in the box set "Beyond Description."
(g) Dave's Picks Volume 6 is included here as a 1969 release even though it includes two complete shows, one from 1969 and one from 1970.
(h) I haven't included live albums of shows that were subsequently or simultaneously released as part of box sets, such as "Hundred Year's Hall", "Steppin' Out With The Grateful Dead" or "So Glad You Made It" (or indeed the individual shows from Europe '72). But I have included "Live/Dead" even though many of the tracks were subsequently released on Filmore West 1969 - The Complete Recordings.
