That's A Touch I Like

Lyrics: Jesse Winchester
Music: Jesse Winchester

Recorded by Jerry Garcia for his second solo album ("Compliments Of ...") but not released on the original album. Subsequently played by Garcia with Merl Saunders, including in Legion Of Mary.

This is the version he first recorded, which sticks closely to the Jesse Winchester original. Note that Jerry Garcia clearly sings "That's the touch I like", though the Jesse Winchester original is "That's a touch I like" (note 1).

The red ribbon in your hair
I'm kind of glad that you put it there
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

The air of flowers when you're near
Your pretty eyes so bright and clear
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

I'd like to come and see you sometime
Baby, you're looking pretty
And I'd be on my very best behaviour
Holding doors and coats for you
And trying to be witty
Losing all my cool to win you favor

You got no words to waste
Just sweet old-fashioned taste
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

I'd like to come and see you sometime
Baby, you look pretty
And I'd be on my very best behaviour
Holding doors and coats for you
And trying to be witty
Losing all my cool to win you favor

The red ribbon in your hair
I'm kind of glad that you put it there
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like
Later versions (such as this one from May 1975) included more verses:
Red ribbon in your hair
I'm kind of glad that you put it there
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

You ain't got no words to waste
Just sweet old-fashioned taste
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

I'd like to come and see you sometime, baby
You look fine and pretty
And I'd be on my very best behaviour
Hold the doors and coats for you
Try to be witty
Losing all my cool to win you favor

Red flowers in your hair
I'm kinda glad that you put it there
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

You ain't got no words to waste
Just sweet old-fashioned taste
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

I'd like to come and see you sometime, baby
You look fine and pretty
And I'd be on my very best behaviour
Hold the doors and coats for you
Try to be witty
Losing all my cool to win you favor

Yellow flowers 'round your hair
Your pretty eyes so bright and clear
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

You ain't got no words to waste
Just sweet old-fashioned taste
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like

Your eyes so clear and bright
I like seein' them every night
That's the touch I like
That's the touch I like
Oh, that's the touch I like
(1) a correspondent pointed out to me that the title on the original 1970 Jesse Winchester LP was "That's The Touch I Like", and similarly on the 1988 Rhino re-issue. But Jesse Winchester clearly sings "That's a touch ..." and the title was changed to "That's A Touch I Like" on the 2006 CD re-issue. It's also given as that in the lyrics on Jesse Winchester's website.
