Hoochie Coochie Man

Lyrics: Willie Dixon
Music: Willie Dixon

A partial version of this was soundchecked by the Dead on 2 July 1995.

Pigpen sang a fuller version at The Tangent, Palo Alto in 1964 with Peter Albin:

Gypsy woman told my mother, 'fore I was born
[You] got a boy-child coming, be a son of a gun
[Make] all the pretty women jump and shout
And then the world gonna know what it's all about

Chorus
And I'm here
Everybody knows I'm here
Well I'm your hoochie coochie man
Everybody knows I'm here

Got a black cat bone, I got a mojo hand
I got the John the Conquer root, gonna mess with you
Now all the pretty women lead me by my hand
Then the world gonna know I'm your hoochie coochie man

[chorus]

On the seventh day, on the seventh week
On the seventh month, seventh doctor say
I was born for good luck, born of the seventh son
Now all I want to do is get myself [a gun]

[chorus]

Got an axe handle pistol, got a three dollar [?]
[?] tombstone bullet, and a ball and chain
And smoking TNT, drinking dynamite
I don't wanna [?], [?] gotta fight

[chorus]
Notes
The title in the Willie Dixon songbook is "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" but all the recordings I have seen have it as "Hoochie Coochie Man" so I have stuck with that.

Recordings
None by the Dead. The version performed by Muddy Waters with Willie Dixon playing bass is available on various Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters compilations. It has been covered by the Allman's, Eric Clapton and many others.
