Comments/review by AA:
"Here Comes Sunshine" is a gem.
It was only played rarely, and the studio version on "Wake Of The Flood" doesn't hint that it could expand to incorporate long jams, with space not just for Jerry's inventiveness, but also for Phil to provide 'tenor' guitar counterpoint and Bobby to add rhythmic fills.
"Big River" is more routine, though Keith's piano comes more to the fore.
"Mississippi Half-Step doesn't gell immediately, but then Jerry winds the tempo right down--only for the song to be faded out before the end.
I like this version of "Weather Report Suite" - it has a cohesiveness that makes it hang together as a suite better than many subsequent version, even if some of the compnents lack a little bite.
This version of "Playing In The Band" doesn't do much for me: Jerry wah-wah guitar doesn't really seem to go anywhere.
The second CD really comes to life as Jerry unveils blues riffs in the jam after "Truckin'" and steers the band into a rare "Nobody's Fault But Mine."
The jams after that really stretch out, culminating in a wild space jam that is resolved in the peace of "Stella Blue"
Overall, well worth having for "Here Comes Sunshine" and the middle passage on the second CD.
