Who's Loving You Tonight?

(a.k.a. That's All Right)

Lyrics: James A Lane (Jimmy Rogers)
Music: James A Lane (Jimmy Rogers)

Played by Elvin Bishop with the Dead on 8 June 1969. He and Pigpen share vocals.

The song is properly called "That's All Right." Jerry Garcia also played it with Merl Saunders (a version is on the CD 'Keepers'). It is not the same song as "That's All Right (Mama)" by Arthur Crudup (even though 'Keepers' lists it as that - corrected on the compilation 'Well Matched'). It's a song by Jimmy Rogers [real name James A Lane - a guitarist in Muddy Water's band in the 1950s, and not to be confused with the country singer Jimmie Rodgers.], covered by Junior Parker and many others. The title on the Jimmy Rogers single is "That's All Right" though some versions give it as "That's Alright."

To avoid confusion with the Arthur Crudup song, I have left the title as "Who's Loving You Tonight" here

This is the version by Elvin Bishop and Pigpen:

[Elvin Bishop]
You told me baby, once upon a time
If I'd be yours, you'd be mine
But that's all right
I know you lovin' another man, but that's all right
But now and then I wonder, who's loving you tonight?

[Pigpen]
You love another man, [but love her too]
I need you baby, I'm gonna get next to you
My, my, my, my, my, my love
I got to be next to you tonight
I want you now baby
Who's loving you tonight?

[Elvin Bishop]
You told me baby, that your love for me was strong
But I found out that you were doing me wrong
But that's all right
I know you love another man, but that's all right
But now and then I wonder, who's loving you tonight?
The version on "Keepers" is:
Now what I wonder, who's loving you tonight?

You told me baby, your love for me was strong
Woke up this morning, your big words were gone
But that's all right
I know you loves another man, but that's all right
But now what I wonder, who's loving you tonight?

Tell me baby, what you wanna tell?
If I be your's, little girl you'd be mine
But that's all right
I know you loves another man, but that's all right
Well now that I wonder, who's loving you tonight?
Jerry sang a slightly different version on 24 Jan 1973:
You told me baby, once upon a time
I'd be your's, little girl you'd be mine
But that's all right
I know you loves another man, but that's all right
But now what I wonder, who's loving you tonight?

You told me baby, your love for me was strong
Woke up this morning, the sweet words were gone
But that's all right
I know you loves another man, but that's all right
But now what I wonder, who's loving you tonight?

The Jimmy Rogers version is:
You told me baby, once upon a time
You said if I would be yours, you would sure be mine
But that's all right
I know you lovin' some other man, but that's all right
Every now and then I wonder, who's loving you tonight?

You told me baby, your love for me was strong
When I woke up little girl, half of this big world was gone (note 2)
But that's all right
I know you don't love me no more, but that's all right
Every now and then I wonder, who is loving you tonight?

Tell me baby, what's been wrong with you
You don't treat me half-way right baby, nothing like you used to do
But that's all right
I know you don't love me no more baby, but that's all right
Every now and then I wonder, who is loving you tonight?
Notes
(2) I did go back and listen to the Jerry Garcia recording to check whether he sang "world" rather than "words", but it definitely sounds to me as if he sang "words" - presumably a mis-hearing of the Jimmy Rogers' version.
